Hey there — Rob here. If there's one thing folks tend to overlook before hitting the road, it's their tires. Everybody remembers to check the fridge and the water tank, but tires are what's actually keeping you safe out there, so let's run through the basics.
1. Check the pressure — cold. Grab a gauge and check every tire (including the spare) before you've driven anywhere that morning — tires heat up and give you a false high reading once you've been rolling. You'll find the correct PSI on a sticker near the driver's door or in your owner's manual. Don't just eyeball it; underinflated tires are the number one cause of RV blowouts.
2. Look for cracks, not just tread. RV tires often age out before they wear out, since a lot of rigs don't rack up highway miles the way cars do. Walk around and look for dry rot, sidewall cracking, or any bulges. If a tire looks weathered, treat it as a warning sign even if the tread looks fine.
3. Do the penny test. Stick a penny in the tread with Lincoln's head down. If you can see all of his head, it's time for new tires.
4. Check your lug nuts. It sounds minor, but a loose lug nut can rattle its way to a real problem down the road. A quick check with a wrench before a long trip takes two minutes and gives real peace of mind.
5. Know where your spare is (and that it's actually inflated). Nothing worse than finding out your spare's flat when you actually need it.
